In looking at Wireless Internet Access, the Question
Is -
#1) Where do you need the Wireless Internet Access?
#2) What kind of applications do you plan on running?
- Is it just Internet Access? Email? Instant Messenger Type Application?
- Are you going to be uploading large files quickly, Are you going to be streaming live video from your remote computer?
To put things in the simplest manner, this is what you need :
- For Just in Home Wireless Internet Access - use 802.11 WiFi
- For Internet in most of America - Subscribe to EVDO
- Travel the 4 Corners of the World - Satellite
In Your Home:
If you need wireless Internet Access only for your home and you want to stream live video and have the same experience as being on a DSL / Cable Internet Connection then the following are your choices:
Already have a Broadband Connection into the Home: DSL, Cable, FIOS
If you already have a broadband internet connection and your looking to create a wireless zone within your house and the surrounding perimeter, then you want to purchase a Wireless Router. This router will create an 802.11 aka WiFi Wireless Hot Spot. This wireless technology
will give you the same
internet experience as your DSL/Cable Broadband Connection while your working in
your yard, your couch on the lounge chair in your pool. You can email,
video, upload and download all at very good speeds.
Wifi is a localized technology. If you need wireless
internet access only within your home or office then this is prefect for
you. Once you leave your home or office, you will not be connected to
the internet unless you find a "Hot Spot". A "Hot Spot" is a place
where you can receive WiFi (802.11) signal and hook up to the internet thru
another person's local network. An example would be Starbucks.
Many places offer WiFi access but the majority of these places charge as
much as $9.95 per day for you to connect. If you will be leaving your
local WiFi connection often - you would be financially better off to enroll
in an EVDO service instead. WIFi is not as secure as EVDO - so be careful.

You can purchase a simple wireless router, hook it up to your Cable
or DSL box and be off and running within 20 minutes. You will need
an 802.11 connection card - many of the new notebook computers
already have this built in.
Have No Current Internet Connection
into the Home and want to go Wireless
If you have no Internet Connection and are
looking to get only 1 flexible Internet Connection, than our recommendation
is to go with a "Mobile Broadband offering from one of the major carriers
such as Verizon, AT&T or Sprint.
You will want to obtain a USB Modem (A
Wireless Broadband Modem that plugs into the USB port of any desktop or
laptop computer and some newer routers ) This will allow you to use
the same Internet connection in your house and while you travel.
A perfect example would be the following:
You live in New England in the Summer and you
have a Winter Home in Florida. Instead of paying for Internet Access
for the New England home in the Summer and a Separate Internet Connect in
Florida you could obtain 1 Wireless Plan. You would use that same USB Card
and Plan for both locations. Heck, you could even use it while your
traveling between locations. You also get the many benefits of
Internet Outside your home discussed below.
Unlimited Plans cost between $50 and $60 per
month so they are bit more expensive then most DSL and Cable Plans which
will run between $24.95 and $39.99 per month. However, you only need
the one plan and the convenience and reliability is worth it.
Outside Your Home:
So your looking to have Internet Access anywhere you
travel. You are in luck.
Today there are a multitude of ways to have Internet Access from anywhere in the
world. The most popular Mobile Broadband services are those offered by
the large wireless carriers such as Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.
The most popular of these broadband wireless
services is called EVDO. Today, all of your nationwide cellular carriers such as
Verizon Wireless, Nextel, Sprint, Cingular and T--Mobile offer high speed,
broadband wireless internet access. This is the way to go today. Most
plans start around $49.99 per month, with the average around $59.99.
EVDO (Evolution Data
Optimization - Revision A)
EVDO is broadband
wireless internet service. In the same way WiFi became a household word
years ago, the newer, more powerful EVDO Service offers to further liberate
the way you do "business" once again. EVDO works most everywhere your cell
phone does. Unlike satellite internet, the equipment you need for EVDO is
portable and fits in your pocket. Adding to your mobility, EVDO has about a
15mile range from every
Verizon or
Sprint
Cell Phone Tower vs. WiFi, which has about a 50foot range from a "Starbucks"
or home office. EVDO is the perfect solution for anyone who travels across
the US and would like Internet Access anywhere. If your a business,
you cant live without it.
EVDO consistently
delivers about 700kbps - 2mps. BUT in many instances you can achieve peak
bursts of 3meg per second on the downlink. EVDO RevA is guaranteed to be 2000k+ on the downlink and almost
700K on the uplink. This is faster than most home DSL connections.
WIMAX
WIMAX is an approximate acronym of Worldwide
Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that
provides for the wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission
modes, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular-type access. The
technology provides upto 70 Mb/sec symmetric broadband speed without the need
for cables.
However, WiMax is still in its infancy and very limited in its
availability as of 2009. By 2011 WiMax will be throughout most of the
major metropolitan areas across the US. The primary US provider for WIMAX
is a company by the name of Clearwire. (A Combined company that incorporates
Sprint Nextel's Xohm WiMax Division with WiMax Provider Clearwire.)
